DR DAVID GUNN - OPHTHALMOLOGIST

Dr David Gunn is a Brisbane based ophthalmologist specialising in medical and surgical diseases of the cornea, routine and complex cataract surgery and laser and refractive eye surgery. Dr Gunn practices at the Queensland Eye Institute in Brisbane and holds a public appointment at the Mater Hospital Brisbane.

Dr Gunn was educated in Brisbane and graduated from the University of Queensland Bachelor of Science and Medicine programs awarded with First Class Honours. He completed his medical residency and ophthalmology training throughout Queensland and was awarded the K.G. Howsam gold medal for obtaining the highest results in the Australian and New Zealand final ophthalmology examinations.

Dr Gunn undertook fellowship training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital followed by subspecialty training in corneal, advanced cataract and refractive surgery at the Bristol Eye Hospital, United Kingdom.

Dr Gunn has special interest and a research focus in advanced keratoconus treatments and laser eye surgery. He has pioneered a number of Australian and world first procedures in keratoconus. Most notably he introduced Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segment surgery to Australia in May 2021 and he is one of only a handful of surgeons in the world currently performing the procedure. Dr Gunn is a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland and he is active in eye disease research regularly publishing in local and international medical journals. He is involved in the training of surgical registrars and medical students and is a RANZCO training selection committee member.
